¡Hola! I’m Sarah Sweeney.

I started Loose Gringa in the summer of 2012 when I dumped my shitty boyfriend and uprooted my life to the island of Cozumel on a tour of the Yucatan for two months.

I almost stayed forever — I fell in love with a man and got offered a job. Neither of those worked out. But I learned unforgettable lessons about life, love, and about myself — and now I can’t stop traveling.

Oh, and I’m not your typical traveler. I loathe the word tourist, which implies merely skimming the surface.

When I travel, I try to immerse myself into whatever situation I find. I chat up strangers, befriend taxistas, kiss waiters, eat strange meats, and actively pursue trouble. I was almost thrown in Mexican jail, but that’s a story for the movie.

I work as a copywriter for a Boston-based travel company and when I’m not traveling, I’m a published author and freelance journalist. Barrelhouse Books published my debut essay collection, Tell Me If You’re Lying, and my essays and food and travel have appeared in The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, Salon, Oxford American, Munchies, and more.
